Movies are one of the most popular forms of entertainment out there, having been around for over 100 years and coming in all shapes and sizes. As technology got better, movies provided the ability to travel to entirely different worlds and are considered an art form that can tell stories on various levels. In the years between 2010 and 2020, various movie records were shattered over and over again and franchises such as The Avengers broke the mold and confirmed that any subject matter can make for a great film. With so many great movies coming out in that 10-year period, it’s hard to pick the best ones, but there are a few that tend to come up often. Here are a few of the best movies of the 2010s.

Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

Mad Max is a franchise that started back in the ’80s and was created by filmmaker George Miller and starred Mel Gibson in the starring role. After making several films and finding plenty of success, George Miller dreamed up the idea for his latest film, “Fury Road” and 15 years later his dream became reality. What he created was a nonstop action movie with minimal speaking dialogue that broke what many considered the rules of studio filmmaking. Miller recast the role of Max and gave it to actor Tom Hardy, while also giving Charlize Theron the leading role of Furiosa, who ends up being the true star of the film. The movie won six Oscars, all relating to technical performance, placing the movie as one of the most technically impressive movies ever made.

Parasite (2019)

Director Bong Joon-ho is well known for some of his hit movies such as Snowpiercer or The Host, and his talent continues to show with his latest hit Parasite. Entirely in Korean, Parasite is a story about class, as a poor family living in Seoul begins to slowly invade a wealthy family’s lives and taking advantage of them through lies and deceit. What starts off as something rather comical quickly becomes much tenser and upsetting and results in one of the greatest movies made in the past 10 years, if not ever. The movie paints a vivid picture of how inequality works not only in Korea but around the world.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)

You likely weren’t expecting an animated film to show up on this list, but Into the Spider-Verse has earned it’s right to one of the best films of the 2010 decade. Easily accessible to both fans of Spider-Man and the uninitiated, Into the Spider-Verse tells an emotional, intelligent, and hilarious story using incredible animation about lead character Miles Morales, an Afro-Latino high school student living in Brooklyn. While the story itself is rather fantastical, it does an excellent job of displaying the idea that anyone can be a hero, regardless of where they come from and what they look like. While we’ve so many Spider-Man films in the past 20 years, none have stood out quite like this one, earning itself the 2018 Academy Award for Best Animated Film.
